Cuthbert Grant, the son of a Scottish father and a Métis mother, was born in 1793 at Fort Tremblante, located on the north shore of the Assiniboine River. At the age of eight, after his father's death, he was sent to Scotland for a formal education.
Upon his return to Canada at the age of nineteen, Cuthbert had become a scholar and a gentleman. He entered the fur trade and quickly rose to prominence as a leader, pacifier, buffalo hunter, farmer, miller, dispenser of medicine, a magistrate, and a Councillor of Assiniboia.
Cuthbert's most notable feat was his leadership during the Battle of Seven Oaks. He died on July 15, 1854, at the age of 61, from injuries sustained in a fall from his horse. Cuthbert Grant has rightfully earned his place in the history books of Canada, as one of the major builders of our great land.
The author's mother and her siblings were born at Pigeon Lake, Manitoba, an area in the municipality of St. Francois Xavier. The family were grain farmers and cattle breeders, and they later moved to a place known as Cayer, Manitoba.
The author's mother, Rose, married William Montgomery, and they raised four boys in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The author was the youngest of the four.
During the author's early years, they would take a bus and head out to their grandparents' homestead at Cayer for a few weeks during the summer. The family was always reminiscing about the old days, where they came from, who they knew, and the trials and tribulations of clearing rocks and bush to start up a new piece of land.
There was mention of a man named Cuthbert Grant, whom they said was a very famous and important person. This information initially meant nothing to the author, but the name stuck in their head.
A few years ago, the author decided to look up the name Cuthbert Grant at St. Francois Xavier. What they found intrigued their curiosity, and they kept digging for more information. In time, the author felt they had enough material to write this story.
